Individuality was not emphasized on the island because we each relied on each other for survival. Therefore\, the individual and the community interconnected and formed a complete entity. I was accustomed to this lifestyle and it was the only lifestyle I knew that existed. So when my whole family and I moved to the U.S.A. the culture shock was dramatic and unbearable. It was like being on a different planet. Individuality was the foundation\, competition was the goal and cooperation was not the priority. I felt lost and confused. These emotions led to the birth of my passion for drumming. I stumbled upon a drum circle when I lived in Chicago and I experienced the power of community in the drum circle. I was immediately transformed and from that day on I have known why I am here."
